Dirt or a Malfunction Can Affect the Mass Airflow Sensor

Accurate Auto Center is the best auto shop in Tomball, and we would be happy to clean or replace the mass airflow sensor if it is dirty or malfunctioning. This sensor is also known as the MAF sensor. It is located in the engine to detect the air volume that flows through the grille. The engine control unit uses the data provided by the MAF sensor to make sure the correct amount of air and fuel is in the combustion chamber. If the sensor malfunctions, you may have the following problems.

Check Engine Warning

One of the first things that can happen is the check engine light will illuminate on the dashboard because the MAF sensor sent an error code to the engine control unit. Sometimes, pleading the sensor can resolve the problem because it is caked with dirt.

Lagging Acceleration

If the sensor is malfunctioning, however, it may skew the data it sends to the engine control unit. Consequently, the unit may add air to the combustion chamber when it doesn’t actually need it. This can cause your vehicle’s acceleration to lag and sputter.

Rough Engine Idling

It can also cause the engine to idle roughly. In fact, in severe cases, your engine will idle so roughly that it will stall. Restoring the balance of air and fuel in the combustion chamber will prevent these problems. To do so, the MAF sensor must be replaced or cleaned.

Performance Trouble

It will continue to send incorrect data to the engine control unit and this will cause your engine to perform poorly. Aside from the acceleration sputtering, the engine will sputter, as well, when there is too much air. Too much fuel will make the engine surge.

Reduced Fuel Economy

All of the above will reduce your vehicle’s fuel economy. The engine cannot run efficiently if there is an imbalance of air and fuel in the combustion chamber. Consequently, the malfunctioning MAF sensor can affect the gas mileage that your vehicle gets out of a full take.

Black Engine Exhaust

Another problem that is caused by an excess fuel burn is black engine exhaust. You will see the exhaust flow out of the tailpipe while your engine surges forward.
Hard Starts/No Starts

Finally, you may have difficulty getting your car, truck, or utility vehicle started if the imbalance in the combustion chamber is severe. In fact, the automobile may not start at all.
